The cover sits on top of the mattress. With a fitted sheet on top of the mattress pad, they do not slip but stay nicely and evenly on the mattress. The manufacturer has found that this design provides a better fit and works better than protectors which fitted to account for any depth mattress since the fitted ones can either be too tight or have extra material that slips around if the mattress is too deep or not deep enough.
